I cut my customer service teeth at a small office supply store in Lancaster, Ohio which didn’t live past the owner’s retirement. I took care of walk in traffic, phone in orders, and calling customers to take their orders. I was there for three years and enjoyed my time there.
From there I tried my hand at telemarketing. I saw this as a step up, at least I was working in Columbus. That had its challenges, but I can hang my hat on making a sale while the jury was reading the OJ Simpson verdict in 1995. I think I found the one person who wasn’t glued to their set.
A year later I took a friend up on his invitation to move in with three others in Cincinnati. I did my obligatory pounding of the pavement until I found an inbound temp position
The first thing is to remember to breathe. Your trainer taught you well. You just now have to find your own style when talking to a customer. This is the fastest way to success. The quicker you find it, the shorter your learning curve.
